Confidential advisor
At Surfrider Foundation, we believe it is important that everyone feels safe—whether they are volunteers, employees or partners. That’s why we have a confidential counselor available for our volunteers and staff members who may find themselves in an unsafe situation.
This could include verbal aggression, psychological or physical violence, sexual harassment, unwanted advances, discrimination, bullying, inappropriate behavior, or other difficult situations. However, volunteers and employees can also reach out if they are struggling with something, such as a difficult collaboration, an unpleasant comment, or any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable.
We encourage volunteers and staff members to first reach out to the Operations Manager when possible. If that does not feel right, they can contact the confidential counselor instead. All conversations with the confidential counselor are strictly confidential.
Getting in touch
If you are a Surfrider volunteer, staff member or partner then you can contact the confidential advisor via email or request a meeting. The advisor provides a listening ear, advice, and support in a safe and discreet environment.
How does the confidential advisor work?
Once a year, the confidential advisor anonymously reports on the concerns that have been raised. These reports are used to identify patterns and ensure a safe environment within Surfrider. No names or identifiable details are shared.

Listens, supports, and advises, and takes no action without your consent.

Provides guidance and support in conversations with third parties if needed.

Refers you to professional counseling or other relevant organizations when necessary.

Remains neutral and does not act as a mediator or legal representative.

Discusses with you the possible steps you can take and what support you may need.

Meet Liesbeth
Hello, my name is Liesbeth Nusselder, and I have been involved with Surfrider the Netherlands for about seven years. Before having my son, Sam, I was the Treasurer and regularly helped out at events. Nowadays, I am your Confidential Advisor at Surfrider the Netherlands.
My role is to offer a listening ear and create a safe space for anyone who needs support. Whether it’s a difficult work situation, inappropriate behavior, an uncomfortable comment, or anything else you may be struggling with—you can always reach out to me.
I understand that bringing up certain issues can be challenging, but please know that everything you share with me will remain strictly confidential. Together, we will find a solution that makes you feel comfortable. You are not alone!
